With summer programs finishing in Birmingham (June) and in Kansas City, Missouri (August), the ABF serves after-school students who have returned to begin the 2021-2022 school year. Partnering with Better Basics Inc, the ABF visits three elementary schools in Fairfield, AL each week during the school year. Using BASIC books to engage students, the ABF reads with them about famous sports heroes such as Fairfield native Willie Mays. Interspersing the reading with sports instruction, the ABF gets students moving after the long, inactive COVID months. Students imitate Willie as they speed around the bases, at times going so fast that they forget to make the perfect diamond shape.
