From our friends at the American Baseball Foundation:
The American Baseball Foundation Inc. (ABF) invites Rickwood Field neighborhood children to its 24th annual summer BASIC program and offers them an opportunity to play on the same ground that hosted great Americans-- Jackie Robinson, Willie Mays, Henry Aaron and Piper Davis. In 1998, the ABF began its summer programming at Rickwood Field.
Students rotate from a sports-learning station to a reading or math station related to sports for the weekdays in June (start date may vary)—8:00 am to 2:30 pm. Using the locker rooms, conference room and press box as classrooms, the ABF strives to improve reading and math levels, using sports as the hook.
Following Jackie Robinson’s lead as an accomplished athlete in baseball, basketball, football and track & field, the children will play several sports—baseball/softball, volleyball, soccer on hollowed ground. Reading about the stars, they will learn that Willie Mays grew up three miles from the stadium and played quarterback for the Fairfield Tiger football team in the mid 1940’s.
